A friend at work who lets me look after his Fiesta ST said to me the other night he's going to trade it in for a VW Mk7 Golf R or GT.

He's single and was greatly disappointed that Ford aren't doing a Fiesta RS next year and he was really looking forward to it.

His current ride.

Kinja'd!!!

Proposed ride for next year

Kinja'd!!!

He's looking at £23,000

I've suggested at £23,000 and wanting a 3 door VW he would be better with a VW Scirocco.

Kinja'd!!!

I don't understand.

The Golf GTI is a much nicer place to be than inside of the Fiesta. I would do the same thing.

He loves his little Fiesta though and not having the RS available next year suddenly made him want to go towards a VW Golf (which is okay) but I can't decide why a Golf over a Scirocco.

Personally, I like the Golf platform, especially the R.

VW/Audi interiors are the nicest in the business.

Seeing how he looks to be a 3 door man, and as a American I'm curious, would the EcoBoost Mustang be anywhere near his radar?

Still has some practicality and they'd be about the same price over here.

I'm very much VW Scirocco, Vauxhall Astra GTC VXR, Kia Pro-ceed and Renault Megane Sport 265. All sexy little three door cars.

I very strongly doubt they'll be equally priced in Europe. I'm also very curious what will happen to depreciation and insurance fees. Will they be higher, similar or lower than those of similar vehicles? I don't have a clue. In my opinion cost of ownership (including fuel, depreciation, maintenance, ...) is far more important than purchase price.

Yea, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered, that just won't be for a while. But I'd take a 320hp(?) RWD car over a 300hp AWD hatch if similarly priced, and I'm not even a big fan of the 'stang.

What I think the Golf R gets right is the look of a hot hatch - it's clearly a more aggressive, slightly overstyled version of a base hatch. The Scirocco starts off with a more aggressive set of lines which hint (for me) imply more than what the package is, but the Scirocco R is gorgeous and has the bits to back it up. Base Scirocco v. Golf R - no contest, it has to go to the R.

Edit to add a PS: I think I'd still have to go Golf R for the more understated lines. Its a pudgy looking little thing, but I like it.

He likes the look of the Mustang but size, price, economy and practicality are all out the window (granted a Scirocco is undoubtedly less practical than the bigger sister, the Golf).

Theoretically I agree with you, but there's more to a car than peak engine power and driven wheels. Still though, I welcome the Mustang into Europe. I hope it'll do better than the last muscle car they tried to sell here (Genesis Coupe. Haven't seen one in my life, it was such an utter flop).

Well I'm one of Oppo's resident RWD fanboys so I had to say something.

I forget size is something that matters …. Sorry my american is showing.

Lol. I don't think he'd appreciate a larger car than a Golf and driving and parking are really annoying at the best of times in a small city like ours. He's driven large cars while on holiday in the U.S. At 23 years old cost of insurance would be a lot more than what he'd be prepared to spend.

No worries fella. You asked a valid question. If things were slightly different then I'm sure it would of been a contender.

newer, more high tech, less compromised, faster, more efficient. £23k will not buy one though.

A dealership local to us has said they'd do him a deal for £23,000 on a new stock GTi 2.0TSi 3 door but not on an R at present and any extras he wants will of course be extra.

They know he'll want extras and so will probably recoup some of the money.

3dr Golf R > Scirocco R

That's just my opinion on the matter, though ... I think the Coupe isn't a particularly great excercise.
